The identity of the artist of the present work remains obscure in spite of some tantalising clues in the composition itself. Chief among these is the prominently placed print depicting Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange (1584-1647), after the portrait by Sir Anthony van Dyck, now in the Baltimore Museum of Art (dated 1628-9/1632). This work was engraved in reverse by Koenraad Waumans, and included an identifying inscription, which is faithfully reproduced in the present work (see S. Turner and C. Depauw, , Rotterdam, 2002, no. 156, pp. 148-9). Prince Frederik Henry was the youngest son of William the Silent and succeeded his elder brother, Maurice, in 1625, as the leader of the United Provinces and Commander of the States General, responsible for a number of significant military and naval triumphs.
