Acquired by María Félix on the Paris art market, the present set of four burnished gold-ground topographical vases was described at the time as having been previously owned by Antonio López de Santa Anna, the controvertial Mexican general and polititian who served as president 1841-1844 and 1846-1847. Unfortunately, it is not possible to substantiate this provenance.
The present model was created by Jacob Petit for L'Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie of 1834.
See Régine de Plinval de Guillebon, "Jacob Petit, Le plus romantique des porcelainiers parisiens", L'Estampille/Objet d'art, No 311, March 1997, p. 51 for the original design as engraved by Stéphane Flachat for L'Industrie in 1834.
