Mark Shaw first encountered the Kennedy family in 1959 on assignment for LIFE while photographing Jackie for the article A Frontrunner's Appealing Wife. Shaw quickly became a friend and the personal, but unofficial, photographer of the young family. In the four years Shaw photographed the Kennedys, he was able to travel extensively with them photographing their personal life at home and on vacation. In 1964, just weeks after the assasination, Shaw's photographs were published in the book The John F. Kennedys - A Family Album.
