LINCOLN, Abraham. Autograph endorsement signed ("A Lincoln") as President, [Washington, D.C.], 30 September 1862, autograph endorsement signed by Secretary of State William E. Seward. Three lines plus date and signature on verso of an ALS, 2pp., 4to, decorative Congressional stationery, from Congressman A.S. Divan of New York, partial separation along one fold, otherwise in good condition, IN A FINE GILTWOOD FRAME: neatly double-matted with portrait and in a large gilt-wood frame. TEN DAYS AFTER ANTIETAM. Divan urges the Commander-in-Chief, in light of a report of General Gordon, to appoint Col. Van Valkenburg a Brig. General; he assures Lincoln he would not want "to interfere with what I think best for our own distracted country." Lincoln writes: "Respectfully submitted to Genl. [Henry Wager] Halleck." Van Valkenburg evidently served under Gordon at Antietam (17-18 September), and Seward's note concurring with the promotion, alludes to the battle of Antietam.
