The Ann and Gordon Getty Collection exceeds $170 million with final sales to come in fall 2023
Across two instalments in October 2022 and June 2023 and 13 sales that were 100% sold, the Ann and Gordon Getty Collection has exceeded $170 million in sales, with all proceeds benefiting the couple’s foundation for arts and science organisations. The auction series has become one of the top three collections of fine and decorative arts ever to sell at Christie’s.
Leading the sales thus far, Mary Cassatt’s Young Lady in a Loge Gazing to Right shattered the artist’s 15-year-old record and achieved $7,489,000, in an acquisition for the Pola Museum of Art in October. In the Temple of Wings auction in June, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s A Coign of Vantage realised $7,068,000 at more than triple its estimate. World auction records have been set for Jules Bastien-Lepage, Jean-Antoine Watteau and Jacques-Émile Blanche in addition to a notable result for Henri Matisse’s Paysage avec cyprès et oliviers aux environs de Nice.
The series has demonstrated the strength of the decorative arts market, with a Royal Early George III mahogany China cabinet by William Vile achieving $2,700,000 and a set of 12 German painted panels realising $2,280,000.
The final instalment The Ann and Gordon Getty Collection: Wheatland, comprised of a live sale in New York and two online auctions, will take place on 6–20 October.
