拍卖简介

The Exceptional Sale is the leading global auction platform for the decorative and applied arts bringing together the finest works of arts: from English and European furniture, sculpture and clocks to porcelain and silver. Focusing on provenance, rarity, design and craftsmanship, The Exceptional Sale offers the best of the best, with an emphasis on the European decorative arts but also encompassing masterpieces from other categories.

This January The Exceptional Sale features ‘The Arizona Spike,’ a steel spike clad in gold and silver that commemorated the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, as well as a leather coffer owned by Marie Antoinette, a pair of Lorenzoni pistols with Russian Imperial provenance, and a Roman cameo dating to 41-54 BC that was formerly in the collection of George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough (1739-1817). Among the porcelain rarities are a set of ten plates from the famed Stowe service and a Shakespearian dessert service displayed at the 1871 Universal Exposition in London. Furniture aficionados will appreciate a pair of banquettes delivered to Versailles as well as a large George III mahogany breakfront bookcase attributed to Chippendale.

The sale also features silver dating from 17th century to the late 19th century, including early Charles II vases, a German silver-gilt tea and coffee service and an important Ascot trophy sponsored by Tsar Nicholas II. And for film buffs, reels from Andy Warhol’s 1968 film Lonesome Cowboys, a tongue-in-cheek version of Romeo and Juliet, will be on offer.

We invite you to view The Exceptional Sale presale exhibition at our Rockefeller Center galleries from Saturday, 21 January 2023.
