The rare deluxe issue of the first edition, in the publisher’s original pictorial calf binding. A classic of Russian Arctic literature describing the construction and maiden voyage of the world’s first polar icebreaker, by one of Russia’s outstanding Navy commanders and oceanographers. Vice Admiral Makarov proposed and supervised the construction of Ermak, with the aim of enabling year-round navigation of the Northeast Passage – the Northern sea route to the Pacific Ocean. Ermak was built in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and named after the 16th-century Cossack, Ermak Timofeevich, who initiated the Russian conquest of Siberia at the instigation of Tsar Ivan IV (“the terrible”). Arctic Bib. 10759.

Two parts in one volume, octavo (265 x 185mm). 24 leaves of halftone reproductions [15 of these recto-verso], and five lithographed folding maps; illustrations throughout, including some halftones (without – as usual – the two dedication leaves found in only a few copies; repaired tears in three maps and leaf 1.8; margins lightly yellowed). Publisher’s original olive-green calf, the upper side blocked with an illustration in black and white, the spine and upper side lettered in gilt, gilt edges, gilt turn ins, cream moiré silk doublures (extremities rubbed; light soiling; dampstain on the lower side). Provenance: V. Stoliarov (title inscription) – Wayfarer’s Bookshop.
