RUSSIAN NORTHERN SEA ROUTE – KANTAROVICH, Lev Vladimirovich (1911-1941). Pokhod “Sibiriakova”. [The Voyage of the Sibiriakov.] St. Petersburg and Moscow: OGIZ-IZOGIZ, 1933.

The first edition, in the rare dust-jacket. Kantarovich was the expedition artist aboard the Sibiriakov during its landmark crossing of the Northeast Passage – the first completed in one sailing season without wintering. This publication collects his portraits of various crew members, and views of significant events – including the ship losing its screw in the ice. The plate captions, and Head of Expedition Otto Schmidt’s preface, are published in four languages to capitalize on the propaganda value of this achievement. WorldCat locates only two copies outside of Russia: at Columbia and Urbana Champaign.

Folio (322 x 236mm). 16 plates after Kantarovich, of which thirteen are color-printed (title lightly browned and with a short tear in the margin). Original grey wrappers, the upper side printed in blue; original pictorial dust-jacket printed in colors on thin paper stock (dust-jacket split at the spine with small losses). Provenance: ‘M’ (Cyrillic monogram on the title, dated Odessa, 11 September 1933) – Helix Art Center, San Diego.
