The first edition of the Cheyuskin issue of USSR in Construction, “one of the most beautifully produced magazines of the twentieth century” (The Photobook). The design and striking montages are by El Lissitzky using mostly photographs by expedition member P.K. Novitsky. The rescue of the Chelyuskin was a major propaganda story, here given the star treatment in the most polished and widely distributed of Stalin’s propaganda publications: USSR in Construction was published in the US, UK, France and Germany in local translations. The Photobook, vol. 1, p.149.

Folio (418 x 296mm). Halftone photographic reproductions and montages throughout, some printed in sepia; comprising a fold-out and a smaller-format insert (faint dampstain in the inside margin; one corner bumped). Original photo-illustrated stapled wrappers printed in sky blue (extremities lightly rubbed; short tears at the spine ends). Provenance: Meridian Rare Books.
