'La coquille de l’escargot, comme celle de tous les autres animaux que [Merz] a utilisés dans son art [...] est une forme naturellement évoluée. Elle croît selon une séquence numérique d’expansion : 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8… et (potentiellement) jusqu’à l’infini, chaque nombre étant la somme ou la résolution des deux précédents. On retrouve fréquemment dans la nature cette séquence mathématique quasi-magique qui porte le nom de 'séquence de Fibonacci'. En effet, c’est le mathématicien italien Leonardo Fibonacci qui l’a observée pour la première fois dans la nature en 1202. Dès 1970, la séquence de Fibonacci est devenue le principe directeur d’une grande partie du travail de Merz.'
