« J’aurais pu présenter une chaise comme une chaise, mais je ne souhaitais pas produire de tautologies. Une chose ne se définit pas par elle-même mais par la connaissance que l’on en a, par le rapport entre soi et la chose [...] J’ai essayé de mettre en place des dispositifs très simples mais possédant toujours un petit quelque chose de plus : par exemple, une dalle avec un trou où l’on voit le trou, mais pas la dalle, et vice-versa. Au premier abord, cette œuvre semble être une reproduction d’une peinture figurative classique : Le Viaduc d’Auteuil, une oléographie tirée d’un ouvrage de 1907 d’Henri Rousseau. Cependant, en y regardant de plus près, comme l’indique déjà le titre Foro ⌀ mm 3 (Tautologie), l’artiste repousse la limite bidimensionnelle de la surface en créant un trou millimétrique qui – lorsqu’on l’aperçoit – change le sens de l’œuvre. Ce trou pose au spectateur des questions sur la valeur de ce qu’il regarde, au-delà de la tautologie de la reproduction d’un tableau de Rousseau.
Cette peinture appartient à une série bien connue de l’artiste, les Tautologies, créée pour stimuler les sens du spectateur et remettre en question son expérience visuelle, en l’invitant à considérer l’image comme une simple observation.
À Milan, où Fabro s’installe dans les années 1960 pour participer à la vie culturelle et artistique de l’époque, il rencontre Fontana – sorte de « phare », de « divinité tutélaire » des jeunes artistes d’alors – ainsi que Manzoni et Castellani. Dans les œuvres de ces années-là, le jeune Fabro remet en question la représentation du monde basée sur la boîte perspectiviste de la Renaissance. Sa recherche personnelle puise son inspiration dans le passé au lieu d’opposer à la tradition les modes plus superficielles de l’avant-garde. En peu de temps, Fabro devient l’un des protagonistes les plus importants du renouveau artistique à Milan, mais il le fait avec légèreté, poésie, ironie et sagesse du passé. Le trou et l’ouverture sont des moyens par lesquels l’artiste italien a cherché de nouvelles formes de dialogue avec Fontana.

Mais Fabro a réussi, en utilisant la grille, l’orthogonalité et sa fracture, avec le rond, la circularité, la flexion et la gravité qu’il a abordés dès le début avec des œuvres comme Impronte, Buco, Foro ⌀ mm 8. An oleograph taken from a 1907 work by Henri Rousseau, Le Viaduc D'Auteuil. Apparently, it is a reproduction of a classical figurative painting. On closer inspection, however, as already indicated by the title Foro ⌀ mm 3 (Tautology), the artist pushes the two-dimensional boundary of the surface by creating a millimetric hole, which – when glimpsed – changes the meaning of the work and raises questions for the viewer about the worthiness of what he or she is looking, at beyond the tautology of reproducing a Rousseau work.
The work is part of a well-known and important iconographic series by the artist, the Tautologies, which was created to stimulate the viewer's senses, challenge their visual experience, by inviting the viewer to consider the image as a simple observation.
In Milan, where Fabro moved in the 1960s to participate in the cultural and artistic life of the time, he met Fontana – the guardian deity of all young artists, a beacon and reference – as well as Manzoni and Castellani. In the works of those years, the young Fabro questions the representation of the world based on the Renaissance perspectival box and set up his personal research by drawing sap and inspiration from the past instead of opposing tradition with the more superficial modes of the avant-garde. In a short time, he became one of the most significant protagonists of the artistic renewal in Milan, but he did so with lightness, poetry, irony, and wisdom of the past. The hole, the opening, are ways in which Fabro sought new forms of dialogue with Fontana.

But Fabro succeeded, going to the grid, orthogonality, and its fracture, with the round, circularity, flexion, and gravity that he has tackled from the beginning with works like Impronte, Buco, Foro ⌀ mm 8. Tautology is the exact opposite of contradiction: it is a mode often superimposed on the self-referentiality of a work of art, a sort of repetition of what has already been stated, but shifted to the level of thought.
