Born in Illinois in 1905, Doris Lee attended Rockford College before studying painting in San Francisco, California, under Arnold Blanch. Lee eventually settled in Woodstock, New York, gaining widespread attention throughout the 1930s, specifically after being awarded the Logan Prize at the Art Institute of Chicago for her painting, Thanksgiving (Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois). Lee's work is additionally held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
