Avec ses épaisses touches de couleur mues par une énergie dynamique, Shusen (1986) est un exemple remarquable des « peintures au pied » de Kazuo Shiraga. Des masses sculpturales de pigments s’entrechoquent et se fondent dans un flamboiement de rouge, d’orange, de jaune et d’ocre. Shiraga a mis au point sa propre technique picturale : il travaille suspendu à une corde et utilise ses pieds pour manipuler les flacons de peinture. Ainsi, ses talons et ses orteils s’agrippent ou s’écrasent sur la toile, formant des empreintes aux formes singulières. Membre du mouvement Gutai qui émerge au Japon au milieu des années 1950, Shiraga abandonne les outils traditionnels au profit de son propre corps. With its flaming palette, Shusen - whose title translates roughly as ‘someone who likes to drink’—conjures the image of an artist intoxicated with an elemental creative force. Indeed, Shiraga’s paintings after the 1970s were often made in a state of trance-like meditation: following a midlife conversion to Buddhism, he had been ordained as a lay monk in the esoteric Tendai sect.
