BLAEU, Willem Janszoon (c. 1570-1630)
The Sea-Mirrour Containing a Briefe Instruction in the Art of Navigation. Amsterdam & London: William Lugger, 1640.
Extremely rare English edition of this seminal Dutch atlas, including 109 engraved maps and 2 volvelles.
Blaeu created this work in response to his rival and neighbour, Johannes Janssonius, who had been printing and selling counterfeit copies of Blaeu’s previous work Het Licht der Zeevaert, and making a significant profit (Netten, 222). Blaeu's work, entitled Zeespeigel or ‘Sea Mirror’, contained many more charts than Janssonius’ publication, and was able to dominate his rival. This English edition of The Sea Mirrour is unusual because of Blaeu’s international co-operation with an English bookseller, and use of a credited English translator. Extremely rare: only 8 copies of any edition can be traced at auction since 1959 (RBH). Koeman IV, M.Bl 50 B; cf. Shirley, BL M.BLA-2a (1625 edition); Djoeke van Netten, 'Een boek als carrièrevehikel. De zeemansgidsen van Blaeu.' in De Zeventiende Eeuw. Cultuur in de Nederlanden in interdisciplinair perspectief 27, no. 2 (2012): 214-231.

Second edition, 3 parts bound in one volume, with parts 2 and 3 containing 6 books each, folio (359 x 235mm). Main and divisional titles with woodcut vignettes, numbered 1-108 with 51 bis, 2 other smaller engraved charts in the text (ink stamps on versos of maps and titles with some show-through, some titles cropped with loss, the whole washed, a few minor repairs). Modern calf, antique style. Provenance: Edward Withorady (ownership inscription on front free endpaper dated 1644) – Casa de Cadaval (inkstamps) – Marlborough Rare Books, London (purchased 19 May 1981 for £6,750 by:) – Lord Wardington (his sale Sotheby’s 18 October 2005, lot 53).
