Fujimibara in Owari Province, located atop a cliff at the eastern end of present-day Nagoya City, is renowned as a scenic spot for viewing the Southern Alps. The snowy tip of Mount Fuji is framed within the interior of a large barrel, creating a contrast between the circular barrel and triangular mountain. Despite the name Fujimibara, which means “Field for viewing Mount Fuji,” the Southern Alps obstruct the view of Mount Fuji from this field. Here, Hokusai's intention was not to depict the true view--he masterfully eliminates the Southern Alps in order to portray the sacred mountain.
