The inscription translates as ‘he who steers his boat well is always in port’. The inscription is not unique and occurs on other works from this period. A charger which was sold from Prince Soltykoff’s collection by Pillet, Paris, 8 April – 1 May 1861, lot 671 bore the same inscription. (A number of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild’s pieces were sourced at this sale.) The charger was again sold three years later from the M. Evans-Lombe collection at Drouot, Paris, 22 April – 22 May 1863, lot 173), but it was recorded as 5 cm. smaller in both sale catalogues, so it cannot have been the present lot.
This lot is sold with a Thermoluminescence Test certificate from Oxford Authentication (January 2023) with an estimated date of firing between 400 and 600 years ago.
