A LARGE HISPANO-MORESQUE EARTHENWARE BLUE AND LUSTRED CHARGER
CIRCA 1500-1525, PROBABLY VALENCIA (MANISES)
Decorated in brown lustre and enriched in blue with a large winged blue griffin edged in lustre, its body with a network of interlocking circles and line ornament, surrounded by five large radiating blue and lustre pointed leaves, against a ground of lustred flowerheads and wheat ears divided by scrolling lines, the edge of the border with a band of script, the reverse with linked fern leaves around a central rosette, with a printed label inscribed 'P. 48 / E. de R./ 96' for Édouard de Rothschild and a label inscribed ‘Insegnia guelfa’ in sepia ink, which suggests an Italian provenance

Confiscated from the above by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg following the Nazi occupation of France in May 1940 (ERR no. R 4004).
Recovered by the Monuments Fine Arts and Archives Section from the Altaussee salt mines, Austria, and transferred to the Munich Central Collecting Point, 23 June 1945 (MCCP no. 388/5).
Returned to France on 9 January 1946 and restituted to the Rothschild family.
By descent to the present owners.
