The first collection of Sherlock Holmes stories: first edition, first issue, with the blank street sign on the cover and the suggestive misprint Miss ‘Violent’ Hunter for ‘Violet’ in the final sentence of ‘The Copper Beeches’ (p.317). The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes followed closely upon the phenomenal success of the series in the Strand Magazine. ‘Rarely has a character so quickly established itself on the popular imagination as did Sherlock Holmes in the latter half of 1891’ (Green & Gibson).
