The Detection Club
[DETECTION CLUB] – BERKELEY, Anthony (1893-1971) and Milward KENNEDY (1894-1968), Gladys MITCHELL (1901-1983), John RHODE (1884-1964), Dorothy. L. SAYERS (1893-1957), Helen SIMPSON (1897-1940). Ask a Policeman. London: Arthur Barker Ltd., [1933].

First edition in the rare dust-jacket of a collaborative detective novel. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. The contributors were all members of the Detection Club which was founded in London in 1928 by Dorothy L. Sayers and Anthony Berkeley, and whose first president was G.K. Chesterton. Agatha Christie was a member and from 1958 was Co-President until her death. The initiation ritual for members of the club required an affirmative answer to the following oath: ‘Do you promise that your detectives shall well and truly detect the crimes presented to them using those wits which it may please you to bestow upon them and not placing reliance on nor making use of Divine Revelation, Feminine Intuition, Mumbo Jumbo, Jiggery-Pokery, Coincidence, or Act of God?’.

Octavo. Frontispiece map (a few minor spots, heavier to edges and endpapers). Original blue cloth lettered in green (faint wear and fading to edges, spine slightly rolled); original dust-jacket printed in green and black priced at 7/6 (somewhat faded, some spots and small marks, a few edges faintly creased).
