lequel l'artiste se sert de gravier dispersé de manière quasi-aléatoire pour traduire sa vision de l'oeuvre d'art comme une entité totémique, qui n'exprime et ne représente rien d'autre qu'elle-même.
Des étendues incolores de néant tangible, sans forme, sans tonalité, les Achromes de Manzoni constituent à la fois la majeure partie de sa production d'artiste et la pièce maîtresse de son esthétique. Initiées en 1957 (d'abord uniquement sous forme de toiles trempées dans du kaolin), ces oeuvres marquent le point d'orgue des tendances existentialistes qui irriguent certaines branches de l'art des années 1950 ; elles opèrent aussi la tabula rasa, le « point zéro » créatif sur les bases duquel les courants d'art minimaliste, conceptuel, informel ou l'arte povera des années 1960 vont pouvoir s’épanouir.

En cela, ils désagrègent enfin, et irrémédiablement, l'espace illusoire et abstrait qui avait entouré jusqu'alors le plan pictural. En même temps, l'Achrome commence à fonctionner, déjà, comme un véritable concept inesthétique, présent physiquement au sein de l'espace concret de l'observateur et du monde alentour.
Les Achromes de Manzoni sont donc des concepts, matérialisés sous forme d'images, qui marquent le début d'un processus de fusion entre l'art et la vie et qui annoncent, par la même, la fin de la notion d'art-objet. C'est en ce sens que cette série signe l'aboutissement de la tendance anti-matérielle portée par le « spatialisme » de Fontana et l'« immatérialité » des oeuvres d'Yves Klein. Allant plus loin encore que ses prédécesseurs, Manzoni définit avec l'Achrome ce qu'il perçoit comme une « zone » de liberté où l'art s'affranchit définitivement du style. « Nous ne pouvons sous aucun prétexte considérer le tableau comme un espace sur lequel nous projetons nos scénographies mentales, insiste-t-il, mais comme une aire de liberté dans laquelle nous partons à la découverte de nos images premières. La présente oeuvre, exécutée circa 1962, appartient à un sous-groupe d'Achromes que Manzoni réalise vers la fin de sa brève existence et auquel il incorpore du gravier éparpillé de manière quasi-arbitraire (le tout, posé sur un support plat puis enduit de kaolin blanc). Ce procédé crée une impression presque topographique de la surface, qui semble enveloppée dans sa blancheur achromatique, dans son absence de couleur. Réalisées en répandant simplement sur une surface plane une poignée de cailloux, d'une manière qui procure parfois le vague sentiment qu'ils se fondent et forment un axe, ces oeuvres extrêmement texturées et matérielles prolongent l'idée centrale de l'Achrome en l'entraînant dans le monde naturel. En proposant une extension plus tellurique du concept de Manzoni, ces Achromes de gravier ne se limitent plus au domaine purement pictural. Ouverts sur le monde au dehors, ils témoignent des horizons de plus en plus larges qu'explore l'artiste à la fn de sa carrière, notamment à travers des oeuvres comme Linea infinita (Ligne infinie), par exemple, ou sa Base Magica (Base magique) et son Socle du Monde de 1961. A response to and an extension of the Spatialist explorations of Lucio Fontana, the self-asserting material works of Alberto Burri and the immaterial mysticism of Klein’s ‘monochrome propositions’, Manzoni's Achromes were self-defining ‘pictures’ that asserted only their own surfaces—surfaces from which all other extraneous detail, artifice and style had usually been eliminated. Described by Manzoni as ‘totems’, his Achromes were essentially non-pictures—demonstrably real material presences that articulated only their own formal and material properties. In this, they were works that finally, and irreparably, broke down the illusive and conceptual space that up until this point had always traditionally surrounded the picture-plane. At the same time, they were works of art that began to operate as real, unaesthetic concepts within the real, physical space of the viewer and the world around them.
Manzoni’s Achromes therefore, were pictorial concepts that marked the beginning of a process of integration between art and life and in so doing were also ones that also signaled the end of the idea of the art-object. It is in this respect that Manzoni’s Achromes represented the culmination of the anti-material tendency embodied by Fontana’s "Spatialism" and also the ‘immateriality’ of Yves Klein’s work. Going beyond these earlier precedents, the Achrome defined what Manzoni saw as an ultimate ‘zone’ of freedom and the final liberation of art from style. ‘We absolutely cannot consider the picture as a space onto which to project our mental scenography’ he insisted. Instead, ‘it is the arena of freedom in which we search for the discovery of our first images. Images which are as absolute as possible, which cannot be valued for that which they record, explain or express, but only for that which they are’ (P. Manzoni, For the Discovery of a Zone of Images, 1957).
This Achrome, executed circa 1962 belongs to a group that was made by Manzoni towards the end of his short life and which incorporated a near-random scattering of small stones (subsequently coated in white kaolin on a flat ground) to generate an almost topographical sense of surface and of an all-enveloping, achromatic whiteness. Executed simply by scattering a handful of pebbles onto a flat surface in a manner that often also suggests a vague coalescing of these forms into a line, these works are highly textural and material extensions of the central aesthetic of the Achrome into the world of nature. In their more earthy expansion of this Achrome concept away from the purely pictorial realm out into the world at large, these stone Achromes echo the ever-broadening aims and ideas of several of Manzoni’s other late works, such as his Linea infinita (infinite lines), for example, or his Base Magica (Magic Base) and his Socle du Monde (Base of the World) of 1961. These were all works which sought not only to demonstrate the transformative power of the artist but also to reveal the whole world and all of humanity to be works of art.
