Widely known as the “Emperor of Kowloon,” Tsang Tsou Choi represents the past days of Hong Kong collective memory and is an artist who rarely materializes his vernacular calligraphy work on paper. The present lot is one of his larger collectible work on paper, that truly embodies his powerful sense of individuality and self-expression.

With the phrase “Emperor” stretching across the entire body of the work, Tsang demonstrates his undying belief in and playful investigation of his ancestral claim that his family once owned Kowloon.

Throughout the last two decades, the world has undergone immense changes. Painted twenty years ago, the work still remains an unrestrained symbol of free spirit and self-expression of the artist.
