Hospices de Beaune, Maurice Bailly 1923
Burgundy
Scuffed capsules. Various bottle shapes. Bin-soiled and damaged labels. Three missing vintage neck labels. Levels: one 3cm, four 3.5cm, three 4cm, two 4.5cm, one 5cm, three 5.5cm and four 6cm
Tasting note: An absolute surprise. The label had no indication of which cuvee this was. Maurice Bailly was a négociant and proprietaire from Nuits St Georges. Deep intense colour with short orange rim. Remarkable depth, I have seen this more with wines from 1923. Fragrant nose of forest floor, black currant and fine floral aromas. Attractive and full of life. Great surprise for a Burgundy which will soon celebrate its 100th birthday! On the taste a fine old Pinot character with full almost rich dried fruits aromas. This must have been a beautiful vintage of highly sunripened fruit. The structure and grip are the backbone of this unique wine, very well balanced with the rich black fruits. Silky tannins. This is in style comparable to the great 1959 vintage. A fantastic wine still with life ahead. I can wholehearted advise any Burgundy lover to have a look at this lot! March 2021. Edwin Vos
