The interior depicted in the present work is Hitchens’ holiday cottage in Selsey where he spent more and more time in the last decade of his life. The works produced during this period correspond with a heightening of his palette and are notable for their bright vibrant colours.
Ivon Hitchens was the first of four generations of the Hitchens family to attend Bedales School in Hampshire. His son John kindly donated the present work to the school for the purposes of fundraising.
The John Badley Foundation is a registered charity set up to widen opportunity at Bedales Schools. The proceeds of the sale will be matched by the school and will enable the charity to offer fully funded Bedales boarding places to children facing severe challenges at home or at school, giving them the chance to thrive.
