The present work was published as an illustration for Frederic Remington's article "Training Cavalry Horses to Jump Obstacles" in the September 19, 1891 issue of Harper's Weekly. Inscriptions describing the activities include remarks such as: '"Hit 'im again"--' (lower center), '"Good boy."--' (upper right) and '"Make 'im go--make 'im go?"--' (lower right). A previous owner of the present work, Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge, was the niece of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. and a noted collector of Western sculpture.
