Probably commissioned by either General John de Burgh, 13th Earl of Clanricarde (1744-1808) or by his wife, Elizabeth, née Burke (d. 1854), who he married in March 1799.
Thence by descent to their son and heir, Ulick de Burgh, 1st Marquess of Clanricarde (1802-1874), at 17 Stratton Street, London, where the torchères are recorded in the April 1874 inventory in the Dining Room as: ‘Three pairs of mahogany Empire lamp pedestals’
Thence by descent to his son, Hubert de Burgh-Canning, 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde (1832-1916), in the 1916 inventory raised after his death by Christie’s; at this date, the six torchères were held at Messrs. Taylor’s Depositories where they were described as: ‘Six Mahogany Torcheres, of Empire design, the bases of triangular shape, carved with masks, festoons, and claw feet, supporting open stands with circular tops. – 60 in. high – Early nineteenth century’ (Harewood House Ms. HTTD: 2016.213).
Thence by descent to Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood (1882-1947).
The torchères were moved to Chesterfield House, London, as recorded in the 1920 inventory, one in the ‘Morning Room’, four in the ‘Small Dining Room by Front Entrance’ (the sixth is not listed); four were subsequently on loan at Frogmore House, Windsor in 1948, and sold Christie’s, London 28 June 1951, lot 49. The present torchères returned to Harewood, where they are recorded in the January 1948 probate valuation as follows: one in ‘Her Royal Highness’s Sitting Room’, and one in the ‘Ante Room’.

Recent research has shown this pair of torcheres to be part of the Clanricarde bequest to Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood in 1916 from his great uncle, the 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde. It is therefore probable that the torcheres, attributed to Marsh and Tatham, were commissioned by General John de Burgh, 13th Earl of Clanricarde (1744-1808) or by his wife Elizabeth, née Burke (d1854), who he married in March 1799.
