This work on paper was inspired by the painting, , 1625-6, by Nicolas Poussin. This painting normally hangs at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem but was exhibited at the National Gallery, London, in 1999, when Kossoff had the opportunity to see it. He subsequently created a number of prints (34 of which were gifted by the artist to the Tate in 2007) as well as this work on paper.
