RUSSIAN NORTHERN SEA ROUTE – BUIKO, Petr Semenovich. Zapiski Cheliuskintsa. [Notes of a Cheliuskinian.] St. Petersburg: Leningrad Branch of the Youth Brigade, 1934.

An important association copy of the first edition, inscribed by the author to his captain on the Cheliuskin, Vladimir Voronin. Both men survived the steamship’s failed attempt through the Northeast Passage, and two months on the ice awaiting rescue. Saving the crew of the Cheliuskin became a matter of national pride, with events swiftly gaining a mythological dimension and a place in the consciousness of Stalin’s Russia akin to Shackleton’s epic in Britain. Voronin was no stranger to Arctic heroism: he had commanded the icebreaker Aleksandr Sibiriakov on the first successful navigation of the Northeast Passage without a wintering stop; and he had also commanded Georgii Segov on its search for Umberto Nobile’s dirigible Italia which had crashed on its return flight over the North Pole.

Octavo (190 x 130mm). Halftone photographic illustrations throughout (margins lightly and evenly yellowed throughout). Publisher’s original grey cloth, the upper side blocked with a ship in silver foil, the spine lettered in silver foil, the lower side stamped with the price in black [1r 30k]; without the dust-jacket, which was issued separately for an additional 75k (light wear). Provenance: Petr Buiko (title inscription in purple ink to:) – Vladimir Ivanovich Voronin (1890-1952) – Wayfarer’s Bookshop.
