N.C. Wyeth established himself as one of the preeminent illustrators of the early twentieth century by successfully fulfilling countless assignments for America’s leading publishers. Possessing an incontestable knack for the profession, Wyeth’s illustrations were warmly embraced by the American public. His versatility as an artist made it possible for him to turn to almost any subject or theme for his work, whether a rural landscape or a dynamic composition with pirates at sea.

“Early in his career N.C. Wyeth learned that commissions for paintings to be used exclusively for advertising purposes were financially worthwhile. Following his first such assignment, for Cream of Wheat, commercial projects were offered to him in steadily increasing numbers: work for magazine advertisements, calendars, posters. He was highly sought after, and despite the large number of paintings he turned out for magazine and book illustration, his output of commercial artwork was considerable. In style, freshness and appeal, most of his commercial creations are as alive today as they were some fifty years ago.” (D. Allen and D. Allen, Jr. , N.C. Wyeth, The Collected Paintings, Illustrations and Murals, New York, 1972, p. 141).

The present work was one of five paintings commissioned by the Hotel Roosevelt in New York depicting notable New York figures, including Peter Stuyvesant and Henry Hudson. Peter Minuet, also spelled Minuit, was a director of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and is generally credited with coordinating the purchase of Manhattan from the Lenape tribe.
