The present work was presented to John D. Allen by the New York Produce Exchange Luncheon Club in appreciation for his membership on July 11, 1957. Allen was a War World II hero and President of the New York Produce Exchange between 1956 and 1957.
The Battery: Demolition of the Old Produce Exchange Building depicts a late afternoon during the spring of 1957 showing the old Produce Exchange building's tower against a backdrop of Upper New York Bay, the Jersey shore, the Statue of Liberty and part of Staten Island. At the time the present work was painted, the old Produce Exchange building was in the stage of partial demolition.
