"La peinture de Shiraga suscite un sentiment qu'il est assez rare d'éprouver devant une toile: le respect, respect pour l'épreuve que s'est imposée l'artiste et dont il est sorti vainqueur, à des degrés divers. Personne sans doute n'a autant révélé ce qu'il y a d'héroïque dans la peinture abstraite."

Réalisé en 1961, un an avant la première exposition monographique de l'artiste hors du Japon (organisée par la galerie Stadler), BB104 s'offre au regard du spectateur avant tout comme ceci : une toile d'un blanc immaculé, au centre de laquelle tourbillonne un magma de peinture vive, dispersant sa force centrifuge en d'infinies éclaboussures envahissant les confins du tableau. L'extrême tension à l'oeuvre sur la surface de la toile s'incarne dans la déclinaison chromatique des rouges - bruns, sanguins, orangés, écarlate - comme dans la densité des puissants aplats de peinture noire, ainsi que dans l'architecture du tableau où se devine la folle chorégraphie de l'artiste, lancé pieds-nus sur la surface de l'oeuvre, traçant de profonds sillons aléatoires dans l'huile qu'il a préalablement déposée sur la toile.
La composition de BB104, où les masses de peinture semblent graviter autour du centre incandescent du tableau et trancher avec la pureté de marges laissées en réserve, se fait l'écho de la façon qu'a Shiraga de considérer l'acte de création : ainsi, pour lui, l'oeuvre est conçue comme une extériorisation de la propre existence de l'artiste, dans un mouvement partant du centre (l'artiste) vers l'extérieur (l'univers). S'investissant dans ses toiles corps et âme, au sens premier de l'expression, Shiraga se montre en cela fidèle aux principes du groupe Gutaï. Fondateur du mouvement, Jirô Yoshihara expliquait ainsi en 1956 : "Dans l'art concret, les deux antagonismes que sont l'esprit et la matière se réconcilient. La matière ne s'identifie pas à l'esprit et celui-ci ne subordonne pas la matière. Lorsque la matière en tant que telle dévoile sa spécificité, elle apporte son témoignage et va même jusqu'à le crier. Faire valoir au mieux la matière est le moyen de faire vivre pleinement l'esprit. Elever l'esprit consiste à introduire la matière dans les hauteurs de la spiritualité."(cité in G. Nothelfer, Kazuo Shiraga, Berlin, 1992, p. 67).
Au-delà de rebattre les cartes de ce qu'est et de ce que doit être l'art, l'oeuvre de Shiraga recèle ainsi un message universel, comme le notait Antoni Tàpies : "La contemplation des tableaux de Shiraga, agités et polysémiques, où s'entrecroisent tant de traces de pieds et de glissades, parfois sanglantes, parfois noires, peut, je crois, être riche d'enseignements. Qu'on le veuille ou non, pour une part, nous associons son travail aux va-nu-pieds, aux traces de pas de tant d'êtres humains qui luttent pour survivre, et que nous trouvons laids et gênants. Mais d'un autre côté, son art est suffisamment complexe pour évoquer d'autres pieds, volontairement nus, pour mieux toucher la terre, la nature, pour avoir un contact plus immédiat avec les choses essentielles capables de nous vivifier et de nous donner espoir." Produced in 1961, a year before the artist's first solo exhibition outside Japan (organised by Galerie Stadler), BB104 presents itself to the spectator above all as a canvas of immaculate white, in the centre of which swirls a magma of vibrant paint, dispersing its centrifugal force in infinite splatters, invading the confines of the painting. The extreme tension of the work on the surface of the canvas is embodied in the chromatic range of reds - brown, blood-red, orange, scarlet - as in the density of the powerful blocks of black paint, as well as in the architecture of the painting, hinting at the artist's mad choreography as he launched barefoot onto the surface of the work, tracing deep, random furrows in the oil he had previously deposited on the canvas.
The composition of BB104, in which masses of paint appear to gravitate around the incandescent centre of the work, leaving margins of purity around the edge, reflects the way in which Shiraga considered the creative act. For him, the work was designed to be an externalisation of the artist's own existence, in a movement beginning in the centre (the artist) and moving outwards (the universe). Investing himself body and soul, quite literally, in his canvases, in this respect Shiraga is faithful to the principles of the Gutai group. Jirô Yoshihara, the movement's founder, explained in 1956: "In concrete art, the antagonism between mind and material is reconciled. The material does not identify itself to the mind and the mind is not subordinated to the material. When the material itself reveals its specific nature, it offers its testimony, even shouts it. Promoting material is the way to bring the mind to life. Raising the mind involves introducing material into the upper reaches of spirituality." (quoted in G. In addition to addressing what art is and should be, Shiraga's art therefore conveys a universal message, as Antoni Tàpies noted: "Contemplation of Shiraga paintings - wild and polysemous, criss-crossed with so many feet marks and slides, sometimes bloody, sometimes black - can, I think, be very informative. Whether we like it or not, we partly associate his work with beggars, the tracks of so many human beings struggling to survive and who we find ugly and a nuisance. But in another way, his art is sufficiently complex to evoke other feet, deliberately bare, so as to better touch the earth and nature, to have more immediate contact with those essential things capable of invigorating us and giving us hope."
