When Rolex created the Cosmograph Daytona, it redefined the concept of the sports watch. The success of the line was due to a number of factors such as the appealing design, the waterproof case, and the chronograph function. It soon became the horologic epitome of sporty masculinity. It is no surprise that the gold versions of the celebrated model were, back then, regarded with puzzled looks and sold very little: gold was generally the chioce for evening watches and a sport chronograph was as far as it got from an evening watch.
