H. A. Gade was one of the founding members of the Progressive Artists Group along with F.N. Souza, M.F. Husain, K.H. Ara, S.H. Raza and Sadanand Bakre. Heavily influenced by German Expressionism, Gade paints a mountain landscape in sweeping, spontaneous brush strokes, moving away from naturalism and towards expression. 'The landscape thrilled me and I was moved as never before. The imagery was unbelievably different and I found the colours strange and unique. I painted eagerly and stopped only to look at the finished work.' (Y. Dalmia, The Making of Modern Indian Art: The Progressives, New Delhi, 2001, p. 174)
In this new vision of nature, Gade combines his scientific approach to colours with emotions: "As a colourist I owe much to emotion. Perhaps, I have described myself as a dual personality." (Y. Dalmia, The Making of Modern Indian Art: The Progressives, New Delhi, 2001, p. 178)
