Lot Essay

Transparency, Astronaut Seat was a series of works completed by Tilson in 1968. Transparency, Astronaut Seat (C) is in the collection of Tate, London.

This work reflects the huge interest of this period in the space race. Tilson juxtaposes the screenprint of the astronaut with the hand-painted wooden frame, recalling his early career in the 1940s as a carpenter and joiner.
