Augusto Giacometti wagte sich im Alter von 31 Jahren zum ersten Mal an ein Selbstportrait, das Selbstbildnis mit Hut aus dem Jahre 1908. Das Selbstbildnis als kritische Standortbestimmung und Selbstbefragung beschäftigte ihn von diesem Zeitpunkt an immer wieder, bis zu seinen letzten Tagen. Während das erste Selbstportrait des Künstlers noch wesentlich von der Ornamentik der Art Nouveau geprägt ist, offenbart das hier angebotene Selbstbildnis in der strengen Profilansicht eine flächige, fast abstrakte Auffassung. Die wenigen schwarz und gelb changierenden Farbtöne sind in grosse, geschlossene Kompartimente gefasst.
