De Wint visited Lowther Castle frequently, where through the kindness of the Earl of Lonsdale he was able to visit 'the remote and picturesque spots in that wild and beautiful district' (H. Smith, op.cit., pp. 122-23). He was certainly there in 1839 as there is a dated watercolour in the Hickman Bacon collection. The present watercolour is from a similar date.
