拍品专文

This monumental depiction of the sack of the Greek city of Corinth reflects Thomas Allom's abilities as an architect and topographical draughtsman and his great interest in the Classical world. He regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and in 1863 published a series of views of classical remains in the Art Journal. A slightly smaller and unfinished variant entitled The Destruction of Corinth remained in his studio at the time of his death (The Artist's Studio Sale (+); Christie's, London, 14 March 1873, lot 166). This was subsequently purchased by Paul Mellon and gifted to the Yale Center for British Art.
