This is a portrait of Peter Langan, the proprietor of Odins, a restaurant in London favoured by artists who were allowed to trade art for meals. The restaurant was much frequented by Hockney and his circle in the early 1970s, and Hockney drew a picture of Langan standing under an umbrella to illustrate the menu, which listed dishes named after Langan's favourite customers.
