Ernest Biéler war nicht nur Realist sondern auch Idealist. Sein Hang zur Stilisierung ist offensichtlich. Dies gilt vor allem auch für die Motivwelt der Walliser Bergbauern, mit welchen er deren Alltag innig geteilt haben soll. Biéler, der seine künstlerische Ausbildung in Paris absolvieren durfte, zog es immer wieder in die abgeschiedene Bergwelt des Wallis. Dort suchte und fand er die traditionelle Schweiz. Sein Blick konzentrierte sich auf die ländliche Bevölkerung, da sie für das Ideal dauerhafter Werte stand und damit für den Künstler einen ruhigen Gegenpol zu den schnellen Veränderungen bildete. Er liebte seine neue Heimat und sorgte sich um das Weiterleben des Brauchtums und der Volkskunst.
Biéler kreiert mit seinen Wirklichkeitsschilderungen einen Mythos des 'natürlichen' Lebens, der die alltägliche Arbeit ausklammert. Daraus entsteht ein Pseudorealismus, ein Phänomen, das sich fast gleichzeitig in ganz Europa manifestierte. Er kreiert Typen, die dem Betrachter das ländliche Leben vorführen. Biéler versteht es gekonnt, die Realität idealisiert auf seine Werke zu übertragen.
Ernest Biéler was not only a realist but also an idealist. His stylistic tendency is obvious. This is apparent above all in his treatment of the Valais alpine farmers, with whom he is to have intimately shared their everyday life. Biéler, who completed his artistic training in Paris, returned regularly to the solitary mountain world of the Valais. There he looked for and found traditional Switzerland. His view concentrated on the rural population, since it stood for the ideal of permanent values and which, for the artist, represented a calm opposite to the fast changes in life. He loved his new homeland and focused on the preservation of the customs and folk art.
With his descriptions of reality, Biéler creates a myth of the 'natural' life, which excludes everyday tasks. From this a pseudo reality develops; a phenomenon which manifested nearly at the same time in all of Europe. He creates characters which present the rural life to the viewer. Biéler skillfully understands to communicate this idealistic reality in his works.
