GIBSON INCORPORATED
The Age of Rock The decade that would make the Gibson Les Paul famous would oddly begin with its demise in 1960 followed by a resurrection from an unlikely community. Electronic feedback was the bane of every electric guitar and amplifier manufacturer starting in the 1930's but by the mid 1960's guitarists would embrace its screeching atonality and incorporate it into their solos and melodic leads. Blending and controlling feedback became possible when a guitar fitted with Gibson's patented Humbucking pickup was coupled with an amplifier of high wattage power turned up full. The Les Paul Standards from 1958 through 1960 were the perfect vehicle. Driven to distortion a new sound emerged that was edgy and irreverent. It is no small wonder that British guitarists like Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Peter Green armed with the aggressive sounding amps of London's Jim Marshall rediscovered the Les Paul and made them the axe of choice for a generation of Rock guitarists. Rock and Roll had now become simply Rock. The clean sounding Humbucker would grace the majority of Gibson's electrics and multiple permutations on the double-coil pickup would be embraced by nearly every other manufacture. With demand for the return of the now iconic Les Paul, Gibson reissued them in 1969.
