The advances in electronics and materials that were developed for war time applications were now commercially viable for the consumer economy. What followed was an explosion of amplifier manufactures and electric guitar models being produced by almost every established guitar company, with Gibson Incorporated having the largest market share. By 1951 Gibson had expanded its electric guitar line to include over ten different models from the top of the line Super 400CES to the entry level ES-125. Interestingly all of these models were based on an archtop guitar platform fitted with single-coil magnetic pickups. In Fullerton, California the small audio manufacturer, Leo Fender, had been making a name for himself in producing quality guitar amplifiers and a few solid-body lap steels. But Fender's success would happen in 1950 by producing the first two commercially successful, production model, solid-body electric guitars - the Esquire and the Broadcaster. Gibson rightly sensed a serious threat to their market dominance and quickly rose to the challenge. By 1952 they had gone into production with their first solid-body electric and linked its marketing with the celebrity name of Les Paul. Competition for the steadily growing solid-body electric guitar market would be fierce. In 1954 Fender released the three pickup Stratocaster while Gibson expanded its Les Paul line to include the higher end Custom and the lower priced Junior. The decade would close with Gibson taking a modernistic leap forward in design with the introduction of the "Korina" wood Flying "V". Though among the multitude of the electric guitar models produced in the 1950's it would be the outline of the Stratocaster and the Les Paul that emerged as iconic symbols of Rock and Roll.
