The work depicts St Michael's Church, Compton Chamberlayne, that lies just west of the ancient city of Wilton and near Salisbury, on the Wiltshire chalk downs. The church was built at the end of the 13th century at the same time that Salisbury Cathedral was being constructed.

The surrounding Estate was once owned by George Cross and on acquiring it he kept adding and acquiring further acres vastly increasing the original size of the Estate he had originally purchased.

Laura and Harold Knight were frequent house guests of George Cross and the landscape artist and well known fisherman Lamorna Birch RA often accompanied them on such visits for the host's excellent trout fishing found on the Estate.

George Cross was an Estate Agent and a very successful property developer who had a stylish mistress, Blanche Gertrude Ealand, who George called Heather. Laura became fond of Heather Ealand and painted her many times and a portrait of her was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1928, no. 28. Heather is described in the Royal Academy Illustrated as a 'typical finely finished English Girl of today, with her short hair, passion for sport and clear-cut self reliance'.

We are grateful to R. John Croft, the artist's great nephew, for his help in preparing this catalogue entry. The picture will be featured in his forthcoming Catalogue Raisonneé of the artist's work.
