SWATHS OF CLARET FROM AN INCREDIBLE CELLAR

As specialists, we have been fortunate to visit many world-class cellars and view rare bottles of wine with frequency. In fact, we demand all of the wines sold by Christie's to emigrate from top collections and pristine conditions. It is a testament to our consignors that we are often impressed by the high quality of design and innovation witnessed in these man-made caves. It is then all the more dramatic that the Christie's team called to inspect this collection was simply and utterly astounded by this cellar.

We descended a short flight of marble stairs to find an entire floor lined with glass-enclosed pristine temperature and humidity controlled cellars surrounding a harem-like den filled with ancient art and beautiful antiques. A built-in and walk-in humidor of the world's finest cigars was enclosed in a marble niche in the corner. This setting called to mind salons of the highest degrees from fin de siécle Europe crossed with Aladdin's lair. Yet as intoxicating as the surroundings remain, they were soundly eclipsed by the marvelous treasures housed in the cellars lining the room.

Cases lined the ceiling and the names branded on the side were limited to only the finest Claret made: Lafite, Mouton, Latour and the personal favorite of the consignor: Pétrus. Row after row, column after column, these wooden cases acted as luxurious wallpaper to this incredible room that celebrates wine. Without exception, every single name would be considered as one of the finest from Bordeaux. The consignor is a worldly bon vivant, with a deep love and appreciation of wine. He only likes the best, and thus has stocked his massive cellar with such.

Of all the marquee wines in his collection, this consignor possesses a true passion for Pétrus and presents here the famed 1982 in bottle, jeroboam and the incredibly rare imperial format. Additionally, a very interesting two-jero original wooden case of the delicious 1975 is presented. Solid cases of the 1995 and 1996 are on offer for those with patience. Lafite is well represented in the '82 and '86 vintages, with multiple cases of each available.

All bottles are uniformly excellent, with superb fill levels and label conditions. Most were purchased either on or near release from merchants of the highest degree. Please note these wines have U.S. import labels and were removed for this sale by a team of Christie's specialists.
