The top rim cast with a band of foliage and the mark 'S.S. Ebor' the central band of foliage inscribed 'M.B. 1677.' and with a secondary maker's mark
5½ in. (14 cm.) high
And two English bronze mortars, 17th Century one with a tablet dated 1690 the other cast with stag's heads - 4 in. (10 cm.) high (3)

The most important post Reformation foundry in York was that of Abraham Smith (1652-62), which was carried on after his death by Samuel Smith until 1709. His bells and mortars and those of his son, also called Samuel (1709-31) are marked SS Ebor.
