Gustave David, fondly known as David of Cambridge, was the owner of a famous bookstall in the Market Place, near Great St. Mary's Church, Cambridge. His stall was a literary treasure trove and many of the books were purchased by the University Library, leading to the bookseller being honoured in 1925 with a gala luncheon in the hall of Trinity College, in recognition of the 'conspicuous services he has rendered the cause of Humane Letters'. This lithograph was probably commissioned at this time and is extremely rare.
