Lot Essay

The present work will be included in the forthcoming Richard Diebenkorn Catalogue raisonné under number RD 5907.

Dr. Grace Louise McCann Morley, previous owner of the present lot, was the founder of the San Francisco Museum of Art and its director for 23 years starting in 1934. She championed contemporary art, most significantly that of the Bay Area, and kept a very busy exhibition schedule. She worked tirelessly to develop the museum from its humble beginnings on the fourth floor of San Francisco's War Memorial Building in 1935 to a widely respected institution dedicated to promoting the arts.
