Joan Eardley studied at both Goldsmiths College in London and the Glasgow School of Art. Initially influenced by the street life of Glasgow her subject-matter concentrated on young children and the elderly. A move to the west coast of Scotland in 1951 introduced her to the landscapes and seascapes of the area. Often working outdoors her paintings captured the changing moods of the wild, windswept coastline around Catterline.
