Alberto Pasini, born in Parma, visited Istanbul for the first time in 1855 on his return from Persia. Mesmorized with the beauty of the Marmara sea as well as the elegance of the minarettes, which he later described in a letter to C.F. Biscarra as the supports of the sky - per sostenere la volta del cielo - he returned to the city in 1867 and remained there for three years. During this second visit, the French Ambassador Bourée would introduce Pasini to Sultan Abdul Aziz, who would initially commission Pasini to paint his portrait. Soon after, the satisfied Sultan would grant Pasini his second Imperial commission for the Dolmabahe palace. A group of four paintings commemorating the end of the Cretan war: Attacco della cavalleria turca, 1868; Bombardamento di una nave, 1868; Bombardamento di un forte, 1869; Cavalieri all'attacco, 1869, all four of which are hanging symmetrically in one of the many rooms of the palace. Pasini, frustrated with the pace of the Ottoman court and uninspired by the subject matter of his comissions, would frequently escape his regal surroundings in order to paint the many calm sights of the beautiful city he so much adored. Il Corno d'Oro - Riva del Porto was certainly painted during one of these flights from the seraglio.
