LINCOLN, Abraham. Autograph endorsement signed ("A. Lincoln") as President to "Hon. Secy of War" [Edwin M. Stanton (1814-1869)], n.p. [Washington D.C.], 22 December 1862. 5 lines, date and signature on an oblong card, 51 x 84mm., addressed by Lincoln on verso.
A FORCEFUL ENDORSEMENT. For unknown reasons, Lincoln strongly endorses a man for a paymaster's post and insists that the appointment be made immediately: "I especially wish John M. Pomeroy to be paymaster in the regular army and if he can be appointed let it be done at once." Published in Collected Works, Second Supplement, p.67.
Provenance: The Roy P. Crocker Collection (sale, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 28 November 1978, lot 195).
