Lot Essay

The land covered with trees in front of Mount Fuji is the Tsukudajima, an island created through land reclamation of a sandbar in the Sumida River (隅田川). The small island at the center is known as Ishikawajima Island (石川島). The protruding sticks behind the island are the masts of sailboats. The shape of the loaded cotton bales on the foreground boat echoes the form of Mount Fuji, a style that is repeated in many of Hokusai's prints.
