Peinte en 1950, cette nature morte de Morandi est emblématique des scènes contemplatives qui dominent sa production d’après-guerre. Rendue par des touches abondantes où se condensent des nuances de gris, de blancs et de bruns, cette composition expressive donne à voir un ensemble d’objets du quotidien; des fioles, bocaux, vases et pots comme tant d’autres qui jonchent la carrière de l’artiste, fasciné par la faïence depuis ses débuts. Si elle traduit fidèlement chacun de ces récipients, la composition dense de Natura morta n'est pas non plus sans rappeler les lignes d’un horizon urbain, imaginé par un peintre qui trouvait que ses bouteilles ressemblaient aux clochers de Bologne, où il résidait. C’est en sondant avec une élégante sobriété la nature profonde de phénomènes visuels que l’ensemble, dépourvu de sentiment, atteint une certaine poésie.

En procédant ainsi par volumes géométriques, Morandi nous invite à trouver une cohésion d’ensemble; à reconstruire, en quelque sorte, une image à partir d’un répertoire de formes élémentaires disséminées dans l’espace.

They cluttered any available space, except for two simple easels… They must have been there for a long time; on the surfaces of the shelves or tables, as well as on the flat tops of boxes, cans or similar receptacles, there was a thick layer of dust. Morandi often spent weeks contemplating his arrangements, repositioning his objects as a means of recasting his subjects. Every alteration, every slight movement, presented new pictorial challenges that the artist relished. It is the miracle of his genius that out of the humblest boxes, tin cans, outmoded oil lamps, and dusty bottles, emerge works of art full of poetry and often most justly called “songs without words”’ (V. With just a handful of elements in Natura morta, Morandi nevertheless created a harmonious image, held together by a delicate and elemental force.
